Armed Security Guard Functions and Duties

An armed security guard provides the service of protecting people, property and assets from the potential for harm, disruption or disturbance. Security guards can work alone or in cooperation with other security team members, depending on the scope of the assignment that needs to be handled.  The guards wear uniforms that help them to be identified as security officials. They have the responsibility of protecting property with a highly visible presence that serves to deter misconduct or illegal actions.

Maintaining a Secure Watch
Armed security teams maintain their watch through direct patrols or by observation of alarm systems and video surveillance. They are trained to watch for evidence of crime or inappropriate activities that threaten the safety of the property they are guarding. Should they observe any suspicious activities, it is their duty to take action to protect the property. Furthermore, they are required to report the incident to their client and to the emergency services authorities.

Accountability to Company Security Policies
The initial strategy of an armed security team is involves deterrence and prevention. The use of a weapon happens in only the most extreme cases where such measures are required to control criminal activity that has become a threat to the safety of private individuals on site and/or the security officers. Private security officers are accountable to the company policies as outlined by their client and act to enforce these to protect property and lives.  Most companies hire armed security services with the objective to “detect, deter, observe and report,” although the guards are trained to perform arrest and control procedures such as handcuffing and restraints if necessary.

Special Security Training
Armed security personnel may also be trained to perform emergency first aid techniques, to handle emergency equipment and to take accurate notes for detailed reports. Each individual state has specific requirements and training that is mandated for the carrying of weapons that include firearms, batons and pepper spray. This type of training has become a common request for target areas of general public congregation, such as schools and shopping malls.
